Transformation Tuesday: 18 Jupiter Dining

Transformation Tuesday: 18 Jupiter Dining Area

Sometimes it’s difficult to see potential when you’re looking at tired painted walls and trim, your mother’s light fixture, and the tile floors you wish you could afford to replace.  The dated and faulty window treatments (faux wood blinds) in this home were also a distraction to our design concept.  The windows were large, western exposure, and on the lakeside of the home.  So what to do?

Our advice is to take it one step at a time depending on your budget and priorities.  Painting is one of the easiest and practical ways to freshen a space.  While we all love to hire painters to swoop in and magically transform our space.  It can also be very rewarding to make a trip to the paint store and start rolling yourself.

Updated Lighting

Updating the light fixture in this space was also a key piece of this transformation process.  We chose a modern farmhouse adjustable height island light fixture for two reasons:

  1.  We needed a fun light to hang over our live edge dining table yet didn’t want to obstruct the view of the lake
  2. With the adjustable height feature, should a client decide to change their dining table to a bar height table the fixture would remain relevant and appropriate for the space.

Updated Window Treatments

As you can see by this photo, the tile floors remained!  The majority of our client’s budget would have been eaten up had we replaced the tile floor (the estimate was close to $10,000.00).  We convinced him that we could take the focus off the floors with our design plan.  On the positive side, the home was intended for a vacation rental, keeping the tile floors was a practical decision.

We replaced the cord operated faux woven wood blinds with filtered view roller shades.  Roller shades are making a comeback as there are 100’s of fabric choices from light filtering, a filtered view which actually allows you to see through the shade while blocking UV rays and glare to blackout which is typically used in bedrooms.  Roller shades are available with a top treatment although our preference is the exposed roll mounted inside the window trim as they simply disappear when the shade is not in use.  A very inexpensive option for window treatments that should not be ruled out when looking to update window treatments.
